AlphaTots Alphabet Learning App

Friday, July 20th, 2012

The alphabet is the core of the English language. Reading and writing start with knowing each and every letter, how they sound, and the words that they’re associated with. This is why it is so important to teach the alphabet to our children at an early age. Any App that helps do that, and keeps my 5 year old twins interested at the same time catches my attention. AlpaTots does just that. With the interactive activities attached to each letter, and the alphabet sing along, this is a great App to help in the learning process.

Keep It Interesting

Keeping a child’s attention is one of the hardest things to do. My children (they’re 5 years old) have the attention span of a gnat. They don’t stay tuned in to any one thing very long. Even TV doesn’t put them in a trance like it does some other children. AlphaTots manages to keep their attention for a long period of time; sometimes as long as an hour. This may not sound like a big deal, but it is an accomplishment for my children believe me. The way this App does it is by offering so many different “things to do” within it.  Each letter has an activity attached to it. This means that there are 26 different “things” for my children to do which keeps them entertained. Each activity is associated with the particular word that they chose to represent that letter. For example, U is represented by the word “unlock”. For this they show a chest and tell the children to unlock the chest. To do this they have to line up the shapes in three separate wheels (similar to a slot machine). This keeps them doing something fun, and also helps with shape identification and matching! This isn’t a new concept within children’s learning Apps, but the simplicity and effectiveness is second to none.

The ease of use is found throughout the App. The letters are easy to navigate to from the home screen. Advancing to the next letter after completing the activity is intuitive and simple, and there are words of praise throughout the entire process.

The Alphabet Song

When I was a little kid, no one thing helped me learn my letters more than the alphabet song, as I’m sure it has helped millions of others. Knowing this, AlphaTots included the alphabet song into the App. Tapping on the music notes in the lower right hand corner of the screen brings up a new screen that not only plays the alphabet song, but also displays the letters as it sings it to your child. My children can sing the song word for word, but they still enjoy this feature of the App and play the song at least once every time they are using the App.

The Bottom Line

You can’t go wrong with a children’s App that not only teaches your child the alphabet, but helps them enjoy the learning process while they’re doing it. This App will help your child learn their ABC’s very, very quickly.

System Activity Monitor for iOS App Review

Tuesday, July 17th, 2012

There have been a few reports going around lately about people having problems with battery life after upgrading to iOS 5 or to the new iPhone 4s. While I haven’t had any real issues myself with the iPhone 4s, it’s great to know whether or not if an App has run a muck and is chewing up system resources. One sign of this is if your iPhone or other iDevice is all of a sudden warm to the touch. This usually means that the processor is working overtime. When that happens you can try things like quitting some of the Apps running in the background or a simple reboot of the device. However, I would like to do more than just solve this problem temporarily, I’d like to know which app in particular is causing the problem?

System Activity Monitor shows what’s going on in real-time

This App is similar to the Mac OS Activity Monitor in that it shows you in real time which apps or processes are running and more importantly which ones are running with high amounts of processor time. If you’re not playing a game or doing something else that would task the processor then your device should be running with the majority of the processor count in “idle.” If it’s not, you can quickly identify which App or process is causing a problem.

I highly recommend System Activity Monitor as a troubleshooting tool!

You can get System Activity Monitor for $0.99 here from the iTunes

Tapper World Tour HD Review: Serving Up a Roomful of Fun

Wednesday, July 11th, 2012

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars Tapper World Tour HD Review: A high-speed challenge to keep the local watering hole running smoothly. Imagine yourself as a lone bartender with a room full of demanding patrons. Your job is to keep them happy by sliding a beverage down the bar for each of them. You’ve got multiple stations to manage, as well as empties and tips to pick up. The game starts off relatively easy, a few patrons here, a couple over there. But it quickly gets to be nearly as fast-paced as any real-world hot spot would be. You’ve got to be quick and be able to see things coming ahead of time while you jump between stations and race to pick up empties and tips. On top of needing to see things almost before they happen, the game gets more complicated as you go along. Patrons have special requests, they become more demanding.

The Jelly Bean has not yet arrived and we have started listening about the rumors of the next Android OS, possibly the Android’s OS will be named Key Lime Pie according to a trusted source of The Verge. Their blog said its the same source which confirmed the name Jelly Bean last year.

With Ice Cream sandwitch on just about a percentage of devices and Jelly Bean still behind the curtains, the rumors of Key Lime Pie are expected to take a long way before they become a part of your android experience, most probably Q4 2013.

There isn’t much to talk about the Key Lime Pie right now but we hope to get some sneak peek at the Jelly Bean android 5.0 anytime soon.

Record Number For App Downloads Over Christmas

Friday, March 2nd, 2012

Android App Log is the right destination to check for android application reviews game reviews and other android OS related news

Sales figures for smartphones reached record highs this Christmas as thousands of people unwrapped their new mobile devices, mainly Apple iPhones and handsets running Google’s Android operating system. Analytics company Flurry has released a variety of statistics detailing just how many of Britain’s consumers received a mobile phone or tablet over the festive season, with the main figure landing at over 500,000. Collectively the British public downloaded an unbelievable 4 million apps on Christmas Day alone, whilst the total number of apps downloaded on Apple and Android surged 125% to 242 million worldwide. That’s more than double the figures either operating system has ever achieved on a single day.

Mobile phone consultancy Distimo has also contributed to the festive figures, reporting that the UK’s favourite apps to download this December include popular free downloads such as Skype, Facebook, BBC iPlayer, and the addictive Angry Birds game. Popular from iTunes was the free 12 Days of Christmas app, which offered iPhone owners free music, videos, and even books for each day leading up to Christmas itself. It comes as no surprise that the most popular apps don’t cost a penny: after spending however much on the phone itself, owners and parents probably didn’t want to part with any more cash!

Flurry staff members Peter Farago has commented on the huge surge in smartphone sales this Christmas; “This year was insane,” he said, “We’ve seen holiday spikes like this in the last few Christmases. But the spike keeps getting bigger. The surprise was that the pop was so big, which means there has been a pent-up demand.” This bears an interesting implication; it suggests that people are finding it more difficult to justify spending money on an expensive smartphone unless it is a special occasion, waiting until Christmas to make that luxurious purchase.

Bubble Breaker Advanced

Friday, March 2nd, 2012

Android App Log is the right destination to check for android application reviews game reviews and other android OS related news

Puzzle games have always been a part and parcel of my day, whether its waiting for an appointment with doctor in a long queue or refreshing my mind from the hectic work load. If you too are found of collecting new and challenging puzzle games, let’s have a look at Bubble Breaker Advanced. The name itself speaks a lot about the game, but if you haven’t played a similar game earlier, you will need to be fast and observant.

The game is pretty straight forward; you start with a new game where you see bubbles of 5 different colors laid randomly on your screen. The objective is to pop similar colored bubbles which are grouped together. You will be able to pop two or more bubbles grouped adjacent to each other either horizontally or vertically but no diagonal moves will be allowed and also none of the solo bubbles can be popped. You don’t race against the clock but you do earn points for each pop.  The more the number of bubbles popped in one tap the higher you score per bubble.  You can see and compare how much you will score with a specific group of bubbles by single tapping on it. But there’s another catch in the game, you also need to break as many bubbles as possible using your strategies before you are left with no choices and ultimately come to the end of the game.

Additionally you can change the look and feel of your play area by customizing your bubbles shapes with square, circle, hearts and so on. The settings section will also give you control over adjusting the background color and score color to match the theme, play environment or mood.

The concept of the game is fun to play for every age group and you will come back for more challenges over and over again to beat your previous highscore and set a new record for yourself.  The controls fulfill the conditions of easy usage and quick operation making it a decent enough game that can be played from short intervals to irritating long queues. The game looks very colorful with bubbles of 5 different colors and you will enjoy the customized look of your choice. Though we were a little disappointed with the absence of social tools like open feint and Facebook share but if you play for the fun of it, Bubble Breaker Advanced will most probably not disappoint the puzzle game lovers .

VIRUSfighter Android

Android App Log is the right destination to check for android application reviews game reviews and other android OS related news

VirusFighter Anti-Virus review

The Android OS has earned a huge fan base in the last few years. Its growing popularity due to its open nature, availability from a multitude of top level hardware manufacturers, and increasing number of apps available on the android market have given Android a surge of activations per day.  At the same time Android has been receiving the worst kind of compliments for its popularity; malware developers have increasingly targeted Android devices by uploading Trojan-horse apps to the Android Market which is well known for its less rigorous certification model that permits software developers to release app anonymously, without inspections.  Lack of app certification process has arguably been a big reason for the increasing volume of malware like viruses and Trojans on Android platform. But if you concerned about the security of your device against such malware apps and want to keep a track of applications that may damage your android device, its high time to choose the right malware defending app.

VirusFighter is one such app you can find on the android market. The initial setup is very easy and you do not require more than a couple of taps before you get started with it. VirusFighter aims at scanning the apps installed on your device for any traces of malware. While VirusFighter runs in the background it scans every app that is installed from the android market or through a package file right away. VirusFighter then notifies you whether the installed app/game is safe to be used on your device or not, with any issues affecting your secuity.  You can also scan all your applications and SD data that has been existing on your android device prior to installation of VirusFighter and ensure whether these do not compromise the security of the device and data within.

As VirusFighter is specifically meant for protecting you against malware based apps, it only consumes resources when any activity related to app installation or update is initialized, while stays idle the rest of the time. Each time an app is installed; VirusFighter scans it and notifies you through the android’s notification bar and takes you to the results when tapping on the notification.

VirusFighter does not consume as many resources as a standard anti-virus application including higher functionality does, basically because the main source of threats-third party apps are always scanned leaving aside the rest of the non-harmful processes. Thus the app will not slow down your device during general usage like playing games, surfing the web, or navigating through the OS.

Over a period of 7 days we installed over 40 new and unknown applications for test and scanned existing apps on SD card but didn’t find any severe threats from most of them. The exploits we found were the package files of rooting apps like visionary and z4root which are actually not malware but the way they use device permissions is somewhere close to what virus try to do.  VirusFighter warns you and gives you a choice to selectively remove the files that could be a threat to your device or all at once.  But you never know you could fall victim of a new malware app that sounds very appealing say a 3D shooter game on the android market which spy’s your private details like texts, call log, passwords or any other information without your knowledge. VirusFighter does a great job and offers regular updates to its anti-virus database. Though its effectiveness and usefulness with relatively new apps and rooted devices is still a question.

Overall VirusFighter is great tool to protect you android phone or tablet against any kind of Trojans, viruses, spyware, key-loggers and other types of malware in very easy way while also not affecting the performance of your device.

Interaction and Participation: The Keys to Unlocking a 21st Century Audience

Friday, February 24th, 2012

Android App Log is the right destination to check for android application reviews game reviews and other android OS related news

At one point or another, we’ve all been there. Whether we’ve played the role of the well-rehearsed and overly-prepared public speaker, or the underwhelmed and slightly disinterested audience member, we’ve all sat through a conference where the level of engagement suffers because of a lack of interaction. Unfortunately, it’s the nature of a world where everything, from DVD menu screens to train-station ticket booths, clamours for our interactive touch.

Thankfully, for the public speaker worried about audience engagement, there are a number of products available that utilise an audience response system; a unique technology that not only captures the attention of your audience, but also makes them feel valued and appreciated.

One of the best ways to achieve a higher level of productivity in your conferences is to provide your audience members with a portable microphone. This not only ensures that you can successfully hear the responses and contributions of your audience members, but also helps to promote a smoother and more professional event. The ‘IML Connector’ is a great example of a workable product that manages to give your audience a voice, as well as enabling them to contribute visually through a 2.4 OLED colour display and a full QWERTY keyboard.

A further way to stimulate the minds and fingers of your audience is to provide them with a fully interactive voting system. This not only makes for a more responsive conference experience, but also enables you to gain real-time data from the people whose opinion you value most. The ‘IML Communicator’ is an audience response system that allows for such interaction, and is a product that also benefits from an in-built conference microphone to help contribute to the professional flow of that important event.

In today’s globally-connected world, audience interaction is one of the most important factors of any successful conference. Your listeners need to take an active role in such events, and a colourful PowerPoint presentation does little to provide this. By listening and responding to the views, opinions and ideas of your audience, you can stage a successful and immersive conference experience that will unlock even the most passive of listeners.

Bunny Theme Go Locker

Android App Log is the right destination to check for android application reviews game reviews and other android OS related news

Whether its checking current time, unread sms, missed calls, battery levels or data connective; Android’s lockscreen is the most accessed feature of Android OS used in our daily lives for any update or to reach the homescreen. To get the most out of your lockscreen, it’s totally worth personalizing your lockscreen according to your requirements and designs, which may not usually be possible with stock UI. But third party apps like Go Locker, widget locker and a few more have gifted android the power of doing a lot more than just unlocking the device. Widget locker has been one of the most popular locker apps until the release of Go Locker from the manufacturers of Go Launcher. The Go Locker comes with a couple of free lockscreen but third party developer have brought us some of the most elegant and beautiful lockscreens, that are completely worth sacrificing the stock lockscreen.

Bunny Theme for Go Locker is one such premium theme that gives your android lockscreen a playboy bunny look. The pink flavored theme uses a ring mechanism to unlock, a similar kind of mechanism we have already seen on sense 3.0 but not many android users to could get their hands on it. Bunny theme is not just a lockscreen replacement for a wonderful Playboy theme but also brings in quick shortcuts to dialer/call log and messages. These shortcuts also notify you against any missed calls or unread messages with a numerical count badge.  The Bunny theme is designed with rich pink textures and gives an elegant finish to all the items on the screen. You will also notice bunny’s sparkling nose ring that prompts you to drag the ring until there to unlock the screen with some help text to guide you on your way when the ring is held under the fingertip. Leaving the phone on charge and Bunny theme for Go Lockerseeing the battery levels directly from the lockscreen is a very convenient method that has been implemented in the theme with a battery logo including percentage and visual levels together with a little animation.

There are multiple reasons you would love this theme. It Could be that you own an older HTC phone and despite a gingerbread update you could’nt enjoy the ring unlock mechanism exclusively meant for the latest Sense 3.0 devices or you simply hate the idea of rooting yet want to enjoy the perks of a customized lockscreen. There’s no denying the fact that Go locker is slick, smooth and completely free. So its worth paying for only the best themes that match your style. Apart from the feel itself, Go locker does not consume much resources on the device, thus keeping your device blazing fast like you want it to be.

Bunny Theme and Go Locker together make a reliable, easy to unlock and smooth lockscreen that your thumbs can enjoy in long run.

Android 5.0 JellyBean logo

Remember an year back when the delicious gingerbread was rumored less than 5% of devices were running on Android 2.2. The Android 5.0 rumors are a similar story and we hope to see a fair share of Android 4.0 only after upcoming Android 5.0 Jellybean rolls out. Before the Android 4.0 update could roll out to over 1% of devices, we have started hearing sweet rumors about the upcoming Android 5.0 from our favorite rumor mill DigiTimes.

Android OS Fragmentation august 2010

According to the sources original equipment manufacturers( OEMs) are not happy about the Android 4.0 and will debut a tablet oriented Android 5.0 – Jellybean OS. But what would make Android 5.0 Jellybean more desirable is the dual boot option that will allow brand vendors to use two Operating systems, say Android 5.0 and Windows 8 for tablets. This will allow users to switch Operating system without the need to turn off their device, a similar feature we have seen OEMs adopting on few devices. And the Jellybean (Android 5.0) will integrate Google Crome as its default browser bringing in more powerful syncing, sharing and management of your online and offline data.

Android 5.0 will be further optimized for tablet PCs, while Google will also integrate its Chrome system functions to push dual-operating system designs. Brand vendors can either choose to adopt only Android 5.0 or add Android 5.0 to Windows 8 devices with the ability to switch between the two OSes without the need to shut down the computer.

However, since Android 4.0 did not perform as well as expected, several of Google’s downstream partners are turning conservative about Android 5.0.

We could hopefully see the amazing Android 5.0 Jellybean at the next Google I/O but the roll-out is still months away.

Do you feel Google is getting closer to entering the netbook and notebook market with its next big release- the Google Android 5.x JellyBean?

Galaxy Jumper Lite

Galaxy Jumper review

Puzzles always sound interesting to me, especially because there’s always a challenge hidden behind their interesting gameplay. Losing a game and not getting through it, is not my cup of tea and that what makes you a puzzle game addict. Well for all the Puzzle gamers out there, Boolba Labs, LLC  the maker of much popular titles- Link it, Toss it and Smiley pops has come up with Galaxy Jumper an android game that yields fun, challenges and quick gaming on the go.

In the game you play as a Hot Plasma which has been trapped into a foreign galaxy while flying through the space. Your aim is find a way out of the galaxy, while you also need to avoid getting lost in other galaxies. The junk in the space acts as a obstacle to stop your Plasma ball and lets you guide it from each such obstacle. Each labyrinth has one way out and you need to figure it out with your strategies and observation. Once you are totally into the game and advance to super difficult levels or relatively bigger galaxies, the path tracing dots will help you keep an eye on all your moves that can be difficult to remember in a larger galaxy. Level completion summary lets you take a quick glance at your performance in terms of score achieved based on number of moves made, time consumed and bonus(if any) achieved; all shown in the summary stats with a New highscore badge if you beat your previous score. Scores make a good sense in the game at the same time offer high replayablity and you can take a quick challenge to defeat your own highscore using the replay level button in the game summary too.

The game is very much like reading an equation the other way round, the right to left approach turns to be very useful in solving puzzles once you learn the right strategy. But well its not that easy too. It’s totally fair to skip a level that’s not on your terms, while you can come back to challenge it again with the level select menu anytime again. there’s also a handy in-game tutorial that can be accessed anytime from the game menu to brush up the various techniques used to bypass hurdles like bombs, one-way doors, color blocks, cornered obstacles, tele-ports and more in the game.

Galaxy Jumper can be fun for puzzle game lover while it can be a little disappointing for people who are more socially engaged and seek open feint integration or other scoreboards. We did miss a little cute character out there but the hot flames were a part of the nice theme of the game. Overall, what you get is an amazing puzzle game, that’s good enough for a short break, a TV commercial to while sitting idle waiting for someone. Though, I would love to play it for hours together to complete its 70 unique levels packed in 3 different game episodes. The game is available without the clumsy in-app advertising in both lite and full version giving you back your precious screen estate.

Evil Balloons

Friday, February 17th, 2012

Android App Log is the right destination to check for android application reviews game reviews and other android OS related news

Evil Balloons android game

The action & arcade genre has gifted the android gamers with some of hottest games out there for free.  Well if you have been doing a lot of endless running and jumping, hold on and check out Evil Balloons – the latest fast paced run & jump game on the android market. Evil Balloons is a fantastic little first person Mario Bros type game. You play as Harry the hedgehog, Willy the warthog and Dany the dodo with an aim to get rid of the balloons which have made the forest too noisy and messed up.

You can start with any of these three characters available in the game and choose between the challenging-arcade mode or the endless-infinite mode which comes with social networking and Open Feint integration, so you can brag about your highscores to fellow gamers and friends. The game starts with a short story and a quick tutorial that explains the controls of the game.

The sharp spines of the hedgehog, the beak of the dodo and the tusks of the warthog are pretty useful in bursting balloons. To get rid of a balloons a character simply needs to dive over them and they eventually burst earning you some score and unlocking new challenges too.  But the forest is not an open ground and you need to watch out for the deadly obstacles that can take away your life. Though Evil Balloons may sound like an easy game in the first look, as you advance to higher levels its get more than just challenging. You face severe threats, have multiple objectives to achieve and need to have a good strategy with jumping techniques and powerup usage, which can let you bypass even the most difficult hurdles on your way when used smartly. Your secondary aim is to watch out for babies and rescue them to gain more points and ranking in each level. The game includes a wide variety of powerups like extra life, extra speed, slow speed (for more precision), bombs (to destroy your obstacles), flying power, handy fire switch and even more. Each level in the arcade mode displays a game summary on competition which includes number of balloons popped, level score, babies saved and rating based on gold, silver and bronze. The ratings can also be seen in arcade mode level select menu, thus you can choose to quickly replay a level and achieve the highest rating and share it with your Facebook friends directly from the game summary.

The in game graphics are stunning and so are the main menu animations which put it alive with character movements. The game uses a very effective approach of adjusting camera zoom levels within the game. Each time you make your character jump, you get a zoomed out wider view of the upcoming obstacles and powerups and balloons flying high in the air. Another feature that’s worth the mention are its controls which are not tied to tiny buttons but use different parts of screen making it much easier to use while you are busy concentrating on your character and various obstacles or balloons on screen.

In short, the game features excellent game play, an extremely low learning curve, and a fun interactive environment that keeps you engaged the entire time while you are enjoying the smooth gaming experience. The developers of the Evil Balloons are bringing new characters, levels and additional items to the game every few weeks, that one reason why you may not find yourself bored of it anytime soon.  The game is available absolutely free on the Android Market and definitely one that’s worth trying.
