Motorola DROID 4 root exploit available for All

Sunday, February 12th, 2012

Again with the root for the DROID 4, I know right. We covered a story just the other day about root being obtained with a $500 bounty to release it. The principal was nice, $300 went to the American Red Cross and $200 went to the purchase of a DROID 4. We aren’t strangers to community members starting a bounty to offer to the first developer to do something, but this was the first time we saw a developer hold an exploit hostage for funds. The method and exploit was released by security researcher Dan Rosenberg and he has since changed the parameters of his original thinking. He has released the exploit for everyone, yippee, and all donations will go straight to charity. That is good news. I still think he should get some personal donations for a DROID 4 though, after all, he will bring many other great things to the device if he has one.

Apparently this was considered unacceptable by the raging masses of Android fanboys, who not only believe they are entitled to exploits for free, but are also under the delusion that $200 total is a lot of money in exchange for this kind of work. I’m disappointed in the response by the community, but I’m going to turn it into a positive thing.

The method is pretty straight forward and simple, even for the less confident of rooters. You will need to running a Windows-based PC for the moment, download the .zip file, plug-in the Droid 4, toss your device into debug mode and run the exploit file. Sounds pretty simple right? The over all process should take only a few minutes and you will expect to see a few reboots, so don’t be scared.

Pop on over to the Vulnfactory to make a charitable donation and pick up the exploit. No donation required, but it would be a nice thing to do.

Gingerbread update rolling out to the Casio G’zOne Commando

Thursday, October 6th, 2011

Updates to existing software is always a nice thing to see coming from a major carrier. Although the device itself isn’t all that pretty to look at, it wasn’t designed for looks. As its name would suggest, it is made to give you all the Android you can handle and still take a heck of a beating.

The update will be rolling out to all Casio G’zOne devices in the typical OTA fashion and can usually take a few weeks to reach everyone. The new update to Gingerbread will include many new features and fixes that I am sure you will all enjoy.

  • Screen will brighten upon touch when phone is docked during a voice call
  • Proximity sensor accurately senses presence during a voice call
  • Auto-signature can be enabled within SMS/MMS messages
  • Device will no longer generate a draft message when opening a message
  • Privacy Caution screen will now appear during Setup Wizard
  • V CAST Media Manager now comes preloaded
  • Reduced device lag

If your patience thresh hold is about as long as my attention span, you might want to pop into Settings > About Phone > System Updates > Check New. Ya never now, you might get lucky enough to get the system to kick the update through to your device.

[CM7 Theme] MIUI Blue look on a CM7 ROM

Wednesday, October 5th, 2011

This is sure a nice thing to see. XDA member donhu, has taken one of my favorite MIUI themes and ported it over as a CM7 theme. It is clean, blue and pretty.

So, what do you guys think? If I was still on CM7 this would easily be my next install. There a few extras available on the devs thread. Including support for HDPI and MDPI devices. You can also choose from a transparent or black status bar.

Head on over to Donhu’s XDA Thread to check out some more screen shots and pick up the apk file of your choice. Install it like any other third party application. Locate the theme inside the Theme chooser app and apply. Reboot once to make sure all parts of the theme apply correctly.

Quick Screen shot of the T-Mobiles Galaxy S II Bootscreen

Wednesday, September 14th, 2011

This is nothing extremely major. Those of you that are on pins and needs for any and all information you can dig up on the upcoming device, I thought we should share. This is nothing more than just a still image of the T-Mobile Galaxy S II booting up. It is still a nice thing to see.

The source tmonews was able to obtain this from still won’t release any information on what processor the device will actually be running under the hood. They were informed that the device is still considered pre-production and is one of the main reasons it was kept closely under wraps at the Samsung unveiling event. Rest assured, we are all over bugging every contact we can get our grubby little hands on to get an answer. You will be the second to know, right after we find out. It sounds like the launch for T-Mobile’s version is still on target to be in October though. So expect everyone else to be bragging before you can. On the other hand, if the processor is something new and different, you might be the one bragging.
