It has been a pretty good week for application developers to drop updates. Almost ever day this week I have had something waiting in the wings the market to give me something new to an app I already use. Netflix has just dropped an update to the market moving it to version 1.7. The update has a four total additions this go round. They have added Facebook sharing from phones and tablets in Latin America, Canada the UK and Ireland. There is a new volume control slider for tablet users. They have improved the audio/video syncing on both tablets and phones and last but not least, they resolved the split picture and flickering that many tablet users were suffering from.
Pretty descent update with some fairly awesome new functions. Personally the audio/video syncing improvements will be the most important to me. That happens to me at least 3 times a week, drives me nuts. Pop into the market to and to ‘My Apps’ to go ahead and snag the update now, or if you are really lazy, click or scan the QR code to go straight to it in the market for updating.

When an Android user finally decides to take the plunge into the world of root and custom ROM’s it is a little bit scary. Reading through hundreds of post about rooting your particular device, seeing scary warnings and reading horror stories can ultimately put a person off. To make matters worse, a simple question that you have spent hours searching for gets met with less than friendly responses. Having the resources we have available to us via XDA, RootzWiki and many other locations is a God send, but not always enough. So enters Root-Ed to help you and everyone else out there.
The application was coded up by Kwogger and the visuals and codes tweaks were handled by B-boy™ and Bentobox. You may recognize some of those names. It is a free application with its primary goal to give LIVE help for rooting any device, detailed guidance with flashing a custom ROM, themes, kernels and general technical help with your Android device. Obviously this application won’t do you much good if you are stuck in a bootloop, but prior to breaking your device you will have somewhere to get those nagging questions answered. It is a pretty remarkable app idea. If you pop in and ask a question and don’t get an immediate response, be a little patient. The admin have lives too, but are dedicated to being with you and your issue shortly.
If you have ever had questions that you can’t find answer too, or would like to use your knowledge in a live support setting, you should definitely check out this app. Click or scan the QR code below to pick it up and get it installed.

Rhapsody is a pretty cool application that you can pick up for free and pay a monthly service for unlimited access too. It is another streaming music service that exists on the market. I compare it to Spotify personally. They have a music bank of over 14 million songs with customized playlists and new music recommendations. Today, Rhapsody announced an update to their popular service that brought in a full featured Android tablet app. Making your experience with the service even better. The updated app brings mostly a visual update for the large screens. With full album art, artist photos and biographies all in a magazine style lay out.
“We didn’t just resize Rhapsody – we re-imagined the entire experience for the tablet,” said Brendan Benzing, chief product officer, Rhapsody. “The tablet is not a giant phone or a mini computer. It’s your companion on the couch, in transit and out in the world, and therefore people experience music and consume content differently than they would on a computer, portable device, TV or home audio system.”

Nothing wrong with an app revamp that looks better and feels better on our tablets. The monthly service stays at $9.99 a month, but is connected to your account. Which can be used on Apple iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad, RIM BlackBerry, Windows Phone 7, Android and 70 other consumer electronics. Gives you an easy way to have music everywhere on everything for one price really. Checkout the app through the market below by clicking or scanning the following QR code.

As users of smartphones we want them to be able to do as much as possible. If our carrier doesn’t support a feature that we want, then we turn to the market for help. One feature that is relatively scarce from carriers is the VoIP services. Having the ability to make and receive phone calls over a WiFi connection might not be huge to many people, but for those who have ZERO service at their office or home, it can be a life saver. There are a number of applications out that can achieve this for you, Google Voice, Viber, and Skype to name a few. You may already have your favorite app installed and running, but if you are looking for another solution, FriendCaller could be your ticket.
It offers all the built-in features one could want. Make and receive phone calls via Wi-Fi. Use the service for free video calls, group calling, messaging and even group video calls. The group video calling function will let you have 4 callers connected at a time with video with 6 more connected via audio only. One of the more unique aspects of this application is that it has been built for anything. I mean there is iOS support, Android, Windows, Mac and Linux availability. There is also a cool little ‘Callme-Link’ that you can drag and drop into Twitter, Facebook, Google + or anywhere else you can drop a link. Best part is the caller doesn’t need a FriendCaller account to click the link to call you. Check out the 1 minute video about and then head to the bottom for the QR code.

It seems like it has everything plus more. I am no expert when it comes to VoIP calling, but feel free to give it a try. It couldn’t hurt since it is free.

Firefox is one mobile browser that many longed to have. The betas floated around for a while before they finally launched an official app on the market. Offering a slick UI layout and the ability to easily sync your information between your device and your desktop browser makes it pretty great. In the latest update Mozilla has cleaned up the syncing making it easier to keep your bookmarks available. The have added Anti-Aliasing for WebGL, accelerated layers now supported via OpenGL ES and few other little tweaks and additions to make it perform better.
With updates though come’s the risk of other issues. A multitude of comments have been hitting the market stating that things now seem slower or unresponsive. Mozilla is constantly working to make this a great web browser for Android, but seem to keep missing the mark some how. With 50,044 ratings, the browser is only coming in at a 3.5 rating. Which is above average, but doesn’t seem to be a clear choice when choosing an alternative browsing solution.
What do you guys think? Is the latest update worth installing, or should users hold off and see what the next version brings? If you haven’t given it a shot yet and would like too, you can pick it up via the QR code below.

Developer: Mozilla

Three days ago we let you all know that Shadowgun would being getting an expansion. Adding in the very popular The Leftover addition. Picking up where the story line left off and adding in 4 new levels. What would an expansion be though with out something more than just a few new levels to pass the time? From past experience with expansion packs, not a darn thing. Madfinger Games didn’t stop at just levels though, so be happy. The full update includes -
☣ EXPANSION DETAILS ☣
- The story directly follows the events of original Shadowgun
- 4 new levels
- New enemy creature
- New gun
- New type of gaming interaction
- New collectibles
- New soundtrack
- Lot of new graphics, animations and cutscenes
Sounds like hours upon hours of good times wait ahead. On to the important aspect though. How you can snag the expansion. Madfinger promised the expansion would be free to all of those that already own the game. Like I suspected, it is a simple update process via the market of the original Shadowgun. So no worries on tracking down a random app, worrying if it the files will check and clear you to have it or any other sort of random oddity. Simply hit ‘my apps’ section and update the game. If you are not on the band wagon yet, or simple don’t want to load the market, you can click or scan the QR code below.
Before you do so though, we have a suggestion to make. Seems as though the update is causing a number of users some grief in the main game. I have yet to update mine yet, I will do so as soon as I make a Titanium Backup. That way if I have any issues I can uninstall and revert back to the un-updated version. Just a suggestion.
Application: Shadowgun
Developer: MADFINGER Games, a.s.
Cost: $4.99

Some people out there are extreme widgets heads, David. Along with loving widgets comes the desire to have widgets that look good and serve a purpose. Not just something flashy, shiny and new. There have been apps in the past that let you create an on screen widget to launch applications. I can picture one in my mind that I used often but can’t for the life of me remember what it is. When you see what A-WAL is and does maybe it will jog someones memory.
What the heck is A-WAL anyways? Well, A-WAL is an application created by Andreas Rudolph. It is a free app in the market that lets you create a widget for your home screen. The widget is in 4X2 format that gets placed on your home screen. When you add the widget for the first time you are auto-prompted to put what you want in it. You can create new folders for specific applications, like all your social apps, maps, games or what have you. You can alter the background color and text color that appears below the image for the application. What made me really like the application is the market integration that it uses. You can of course use your own images in the widget for your applications, but you can also have the app ‘fetch’ the super cool looking banners that most application developers use at the top of the market page. Making your widgets and applications look really sweet.
As for navigation? Well, that still is a bit desirable. The widget doesn’t scroll to the next app or have any super cool effect. Instead you have to ta on the arrow keys located next to the folder/app,dev name that gets listed. On the plus side though, you can add as many apps to a particular folder of your choosing, or just make one nice looking banner app widget for one app. The choice is up to you. Take a look at the screen shots below to see if it looks like something you are interested in messing with. If it is, hit up the QR code by clicking or scanning it to go pick up the app for a test run.

A few days ago we let you all know there was a pretty nifty update available to test out for Dropbox. It was made available at the Dropbox website and included a ton of new improvements, UI changes and just all around cool stuff. Not everyone is int the beat testing of app or app updates so some of you may have skipped it. Well, Dropbox felt as though the updated version was good enough to move to it to the market officially no. Here is what you can expect if you missed it last time.
- Favorites: quick offline access to files
- Bulk upload photos and videos
- Rename files and folders
- Single-tap access to all file and folder actions
- Improved gallery view
- Upload from and export to local storage
- Numerous bug fixes and stability improvements
Some have said a few features that they loved are now absent in this update. One such features that was mentioned was one touch downloading. I took a look into my update and I see what they are talking about. You can still tap on any apps or files that would require downloading to use. The one touch downloading is no longer the case for image files though. Now when you tap on an image you get to see it like you would in your normal device gallery. With options to mark as favorite, share, export or delete. Tap on ‘export’ then ‘save to SD. Now, this is a little better in my opinion. Now you can actually select the folder to save the image to rather than it just downloading to a dropbox folder on your card.
If you skipped the beta release out of fear it would break something, your fears are over and you can now update it via the market. If you deleted Dropbox or are looking to take give it a shot, you can locate the QR code below. Enjoy and have a Happy Holiday as well.

Bring in the new year with a new Go Launcher EX Theme! Actually beyond the cheesy new year references this is a pretty slick theme. I really like it’s simple materialistic (dare I say ICS like) lines. But it’s definitely not yet another Ice Cream Sandwich theme. Beginning 2012 is different from most that I’ve seen and so far I’m really enjoying it.
Maybe it’s more Tron than ICS… but turn on the Cube (outside) transition and the theme takes on new life. The sphere transition effect could be another winner. I’m not sure I like the wallpaper though. I’m sticking with it for now but the line in the middle of the screen made my 4×2 Beautiful Widgets Super clock look funky so I switched to the 4×1 view. Make sure that you set the “Wallpaper mode” (under preferences->Screen Settings->Wallpaper mode) to “Vertical screen mode” to make sure that the default wallpaper shows correctly.
One thing I can’t stand is when half my icons are replaced while leaving another half stock. It just looks sloppy. Fortunately for this theme the stock icons (other than the Go Launcher icons for the dockbar) are wrapped in a nice turquoise frame. Creating the nice uniform look without having to have every single app have its own custom icon. This is a plus to most Go Launcher themes. So if you don’t have Go Launcher I highly recommend it.

Not 15 minutes after we publish the story for the new updates headed to the Google+ web-based service does Google push an update to the app in the market. You can look forward to a new design of the photo albums view and People suggestions when composing a Messenger conversation.
