Sunday, February 12th, 2012

If you are a big Minecraftian, or whatever you might can yourself, then an update just landed that might make you waste away the rest of the weekend. We all know that Minecraft PE is a huge seller, but it did have its limitations. With only one available mode, creativity mode, leaving you wanting more and many people board. Well, that is no longer the case.

MPE has just been updated today, bringing the 8-bit wonder version 0.2.0. The update brings in a whole slew of new goodies to feed your addiction with. There is a new mode called ‘Survival’, new blocks like doors and fences, and the ability to fly has also been added in. They have even tossed in sheep and zombies. Overall it is a pretty big update that offers you a much better experience for your money.

If you haven’t picked the update up yet you should. Feel free to pop into the market via the QR code below to snag it faster, or to pick the game up if have been waiting for it to do more.

Application: Minecraft – Pocket Edition
Developer: Mojang
Cost: $6.99

Alternatively, it looks like they have update the DEMO version with the same new goodies. You can check it out HERE.

Friday, February 10th, 2012

Have you been considering rooting your Droid RAZR? We don’t blame you. What reasonable person wouldn’t want too? Thanks to some work by mattlgroff  over at XDA, you now have a great Windows based utility to work with. The developer of the tool has a lite and full version available for your use. The differences are pretty minor. The full version of each includes the fastboot files where as the lite version does not.

Yo can see the tool doesn’t just root your device. It has a whole slew of useful options and setting incorporate into one application. Looks like it should help make your RAZR hackery life a bit easier. For full details and all download files, go check out mattlgroff’s XDA thread. Have fun, be safe and let us know how everything works out.

Source code for Android 4.0.3 pushed to AOSP

Saturday, December 17th, 2011

We have all been following along with everything that Ice Cream Sandwich has been up to today. It has been a whole slew of things really. For a Friday, it turned out to be rather eventful. Now the most recent update to Android 4.0.3 has been pushed to AOSP. This is fairly big news for many reasons. Not just because it is source and helps developers build custom ROMs, but because there are 4 versions of it available. They include builds for the Motorola XOOM, Nexus S and both versions of the Galaxy Nexus variants.

So now there is source available for not only phones but for tablets. To top it off, 2 of the four of those are Verizon devices one of which is also a Motorola device, we all know how much they hate to let code out of the vault.

For some more detailed information, pop over to Google Groups for a quick read from Jean-Baptiste M. “JBQ” Queru.

Black Friday deals revealed for Verizon

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011

Do you have your Black Friday plans all worked out yet? Me neither. There are just too many stores and too many deals to wade through. A lot of a persons plans depend on money available. While others use the biggest shopping holiday of the year to max out those credit cards. If you are looking for that special deal on a new device from your favorite carrier, or the one you are stuck on, here is one coming in from Verizon.

Look like you will be able to pick up a whole slew of devices for some pretty great prices.

  • Red DROID Incredible 2 for FREE
  • LG Revolution for $49.99

If there is something else on your list though, they have a few other deals that will be running all weekend. Including the Double Smartphone data deal (4GB for $30)

  • Xoom for $199 on contract
  • Xperia Play for FREE
  • LG Enlighten for FREE

The only thing that always seems to get under my skin, is the deals that the carriers often have aren’t really all that amazing. Where as companies like Amazon will be offering a much larger selection of devices for mere pennies. Literally.

PDF Reader – iPhone Edtion: iPhone App Review Video

Reviewed by Valerie Lauer

When an app hits number one in productivity in the USA, Mexico, Germany and Brazil, there’s usually a darn good reason for its success. When an app like this gets a hefty update, making it even better, it’s time to stand up and pay attention.

That’s the case with PDF Reader – iPhone Edition, a PDF management app from Kdan Mobile Software. Not only has this top ranking app managed to build a loyal following, it’s upped the ante with a whole slew of extras.

Concept & Features: ***** (5/5)

If you’re new to the PDF Reader – iPhone Edition app, then you’re in luck. If you’re already a fan, then a new set of updates will remind you why this app remains the ultimate resource for productivity on your iPhone.

Rarely have we seen an app that supports so many different types of files and give users such a wide variety of options for importing, exporting, sharing and editing PDF documents. Any document that comes across your iPhone is fair game. You can even create new PDFs from your camera roll or use an in-app interface to snap a photo, instantly creating a document.

Once the document is in the app, you can annotate, highlight, add text boxes, scale exposure, perform a word search, fill in forms and more. There’s even an option to password protect sensitive documents in the app’s private folder without any fuss.

For sharing, you can export files via email, sync to a plethora of cloud storage solutions (GoogleDocs, Dropbox, FTP client, etc), print directly via Air Play or transfer via Wi Fi and USB right to your computer. Are you impressed yet? We were.

Layout & Design: ****½ (4.5/5)

PDF Reader – iPhone Edition

The PDF Reader – iPhone Edition’s streamlined UI helps iPhone users make the most of a small screen. While you are viewing any document a two-second hold will launch the document’s editing menu. Additional options, such as the text search and view features, are tucked into a menu key located in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen.

Or, you can enjoy your documents full screen, with a responsive pinch to zoom feature and no annoying menus. IPhone users will appreciate the option, as it allows them to make the most of a small screen.

It may take you a few moments to acclimate to the app’s various navigation options. They can be a bit complex. We suggest tapping the info icon and spending some quality time with the app’s manual. There is no built in walkthrough, so you’ll have to go hunting for this on your own.

Functionality: ****½ (4.5/5)

One of the top compliments the PDF Reader – iPhone Edition app receives in user reviews is for its fast load time. Opening multi-page documents just takes a moment, even if they are gargantuan. This app is ideal for students or professionals that need to access, edit and share large documents.

That speed can be compromised by the fact that you must move files out of the app’s inbox before you can make any changes. Also, scanned PDF docs cannot be annotated, an unfortunate limitation.

Overall Value: ***** (5/5)

For $2.99 the PDF Reader – iPhone Edition can be your go-to app for mobile documents. Just remember, the latest update was a big one, with the option to edit text selection, WebDAV Client storage, PDF image scan and iOS 5 compatibility coming on board. This app is obviously going to continue to be a powerhouse player for iPhone productivity.

Another Siri wanna be lands on the market, what’s your take on It?

Tuesday, November 15th, 2011

Ever since Siri hit the iPhone, there has been a whole slew of apps claiming to take it on. Is voice recognition so new that the world feels like it must compete for space in the market? Hasn’t services like Vlingo been around forever, in tech terms? I feel like the whole voice recognition service and apps have been utterly run into the dirt thanks to Siri. For some reason though, that doesn’t stop people from creating similar apps and and comparing themselves to it.

Enter Skyvi from BlueTornado. Another Siri ‘competitor’. So they say, literally, “Got Siri jealousy? Get Skyvi Now!” Does that mean it is any less productive or fun to mess around with? not really. Voice Recognition software is still a great idea, it just lacks in so many places that I personally can’t enjoy it. But, if you are looking for a comical companion to make yourself feel better and have a laugh or two with, then have at it.

Skyvi offers  -

-Fun chats, witty remarks, tells jokes
-Access Facebook with voice
-Access Twitter with voice
-Tweet or Update Facebook with Voice
-Ask questions with voice
-> When is Britney Spear’s Birthday?
-> What’s the weather like in San Francisco?
-> How many calories are in a Bagel?

All rather entertaining but not always that useful. The application also provides optional Facebook and Twitter integration and the ability to ask for things near your location, what a concept.

The market rating for the app are fairly high, 4.4 out of 2,740 ratings. I would naturally assume that the application is easily worth your time and effort if you are looking for something that can work fairly well. The development team seems to also be on point answering questions and making improvements based on your feed back. So if you are in the market for another voice recognition app, please feel free to check it out below.

Alpha Combat: Defend Your Country iPhone App Review

Alpha Combat for iPhone 1 200x300 Alpha Combat Defend Your Country: Macho Title, Geeky Arcade Glee

Reviewed by Luke Patrick

Alpha Combat: Defend Your Country iPhone app by developer Bluecloud, is yet another iPhone release to hark back to the golden era of arcade shoot-em-ups—you know, the kind you’d see at the local pizza joint on a Friday night. It’s chock full of blasting action, and if you’re a fan of the genre, you owe it yourself to try this Open Feint and Game Center enabled title. For our full thoughts on Alpha Combat, check out our iPhone app review below.

Concept and Gameplay ****~ (4/5)

As mentioned, the gameplay of Alpha Combat is a near constant homage to a time when all one needed to craft a hit game was a couple of good sprites and an endless array of baddies. The app has players controlling a single plane that shoots a never-ending stream of bullets at wave after wave of oncoming baddies. Players control their plane with the use of a single finger, which at first was killer, though later on we decided we’d much rather make use of the iPhone’s built-in accelerometer to get the job done: Having a finger in the way really gummed up the works. Thankfully, our tilting desires are also included here, leaving us only with a distinct pining for a joystick or on-screen D-pad.

To offset this downside, however, Alpha Combat does come with a whole slew of weapons upgrades that keep the ball rolling. Likewise, there’s a whopping 7 levels (these are really more like missions) to keep the player interested, as well as more than enough achievements to choke a horse. If you’re into the kind of leader board heavy, skill building competitiveness that is Game Center and Open Feint integration, you’re in for a real treat with Alpha Combat: The game features both in spades, and will delight on the online diehard to no end. All in all, it’s a tight package that made us wax a little more than nostalgic over the good-old-days of top-down baddie blasting—though we’re certainly glad to save the quarters!

Design and Graphics ***½~ (3.5/5)

Alpha Combat for iPhone 2 200x300 Alpha Combat Defend Your Country: Macho Title, Geeky Arcade Glee

Alpha Combat for iPhone

Aside from the lack of a joystick, we were quite enthralled with Alpha Combat’s excellent three dimensional graphics. This isn’t a completely 3D experience, as players view the action from a top-down perspective, though we found the mix of two dimensional gaming and 3D fun quite engaging.

However, we weren’t as big a fan of the in-app purchases, which are required to unlock new planes. We’ve already payed a dollar for the app, making us feel much less inclined to spend another on features we’d rather have as prizes.

Overall Value ****~ (4/5)

That being said, the baddie blasting fun of Alpha Combat is only a dollar in the App Store. If you’re a fan of arcade shooters, you can hardly go wrong spending that kind of money. Likewise, as it won’t break the bank to test drive the action, Alpha Combat comes with our full recommendation.

Another Samsung device headed towards T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy W dubbed the Exhibit II 4G

Thursday, October 13th, 2011

T-Mobile sure isn’t wasting anytime bringing in a whole slew of devices for various comfort levels and price tags. They just launched the SGS II and HTC Amaze along with the LG myTouch line. They have another LG device on the way, that really isn’t much to look at. Now There is some leaked info on a new Samsung Galaxy W device headed to Magenta. Don’t for a second thing that this will be ‘just another cheap device’.

The Samsung Exhibit II is said to be sporting a 1.4Ghz single-core processor, 3.7″ WVGA display and a 5mp camera with what looks like a single LED flash. Sounds like a slightly souped up Galaxy S in my opinion. You can see the style and design of this  new device looks pretty clean. I kinda like it.

No pricing information has been leaked out just yet, but if I had to guess, I’d say somewhere around the $150 marker. That puts slightly higher than the current Vibrant and slightly lower than the Galaxy S II. Assuming they are smart about pricing it that is. Now that some official press shots have emerged, we can only hope that T-Mobile gets this puppy out around mid to late November. That would put in time perfectly with the holiday shopping and give the parents a choice of something new that doesn’t break bank to buy.

Android on the HP TouchPad is growing even closer, more issues have been Handled

Wednesday, September 21st, 2011

The last time we had good news to report on an Android port for the HP TouchPad was nearly 2 weeks ago. At that time, CyanogenMOD team members had fixed the GPU Acceleration and solved the color issues. With patience comes more news. The team didn’t just suddenly stop working on the project , in fact, they have moved through a lot of other issues in a very short amount of time.

The latest developments to come from the project include a whole slew of new fixes. They have WiFi up and running, sound is fixed, of course the accelerometer is functioning, along with 3D games and video acceleration. Just to name a few. They certainly don’t waste any time do they?

With progress they are making to bring Android to those of you that were lucky enough, or smart enough, to snag the HP TouchPad when it was available, a full port should be just around the corner. I am sure it will roll out much like all CM ROMs do, in the form of nightlies. Just as soon as they have it stable enough for the Android junkie out there. Until then, check out the progress in the videos below and start drooling about that Android goodness.

Maniac Games launches development of Insane Arcade – New iOS Game

Tuesday, August 2nd, 2011

Shakopee, Minnesota – Newcomer Maniac Games today is pleased to announce development of a new freemium title called, Insane Arcade. Players will get a chance to start with one tiny arcade and not only build that one to great success, but franchise out and build multiple arcades at once. Part sim part strategy with the social elements mixed in around them, you will be able to visit “neighbors” arcades, play mini-games, and try to attract so called “legends.”

Controls will be simple and intuitive for players as the team has been working on ways to try to minimize the UI and focus mostly on game play. This is done by intermixing some of the menu buttons within the scene itself. For example, the way players will order machines is by tapping on a magazine that’s sitting on the front counter.

Attracting patrons to your arcade will truly be a strategic experience as well, as you talk to your patrons and “guide” them to machines they are looking for. Maniac games also promises to launch the game with a whole slew of custom arcade games.

“We want the community to have access to a wealth of content. We literally want there to be hundreds of machines to pick from,” says Joe Heitzman, one of the lead designers.

The game is set for release within the Fall of 2011 for idevices first with a port to android coming sometime early next year. The developers have set up a Kick-starter page to help with certain parts of development.
