Sunday, February 12th, 2012

If you are a big Minecraftian, or whatever you might can yourself, then an update just landed that might make you waste away the rest of the weekend. Well, that is no longer the case.

There is a new mode called ‘Survival’, new blocks like doors and fences, and the ability to fly has also been added in. They have even tossed in sheep and zombies. Overall it is a pretty big update that offers you a much better experience for your money.

If you haven’t picked the update up yet you should. Feel free to pop into the market via the QR code below to snag it faster, or to pick the game up if have been waiting for it to do more.

Peggle and Plants vs Zombies slated to hit the Android Market this Week

Wednesday, December 14th, 2011

Many of you will remember when both Peggle and Plants vs Zombies hit the Amazon App Store. It infuriated many people, especially those that don’t have access to the Amazon service. I know I picked them both up when they were available. PopCap games made mention that they would be coming to the market eventually. Looks like ‘eventually’ is right around the corner. In an official blog post from Jeff over at PopCap games he says – “And we agree with you: It’s about time already! Sheesh!” They know it took forever and are very excited to bring this two blockbuster hits to more people in more places.

If looking at their current price tags on Amazon is any indication of price, we can expect to see these land at around $2.99 each. If we are really lucky, they will both become available by Thursday and magically make their way into the 10 billion promo. Wouldn’t that be a nice surprise to see? Especially since they were both launched as an Amazon AppStore free app of the day originally.

We have included a video below of each game in action just incase you have forgotten about them.

Peggle Aimed to Roll Out Tomorrow; Via Amazon App Store

Tuesday, June 21st, 2011

I am sure you have all been waiting for this just as long as I have. According to a release offered up to Phandroid, PopCap games will be releasing Peggle for Android tomorrow. This will follow the similar pattern they have had with their other titles, Chuzzle and Plants Vs. Zombies, and have a 2 week exclusive deal through the Amazon app store. Which means overseas individuals will have to wait as well as those poor AT&T customers until the market version is released.

The initial release should be live tomorrow and be featured as the FREE app of the day, so keep an eye on that and on Androidspin for the announcement. After the 1 day special offer it will be purchasable for $2.99.

If you happen to be one of those sad souls that have never heard of or played Peggle *cough* Bryce *cough*, then feel free to head over to PopCap Games website for a free PC download version that you can test out.

App Review: Plants vs Zombies [Video]

Monday, June 6th, 2011

Plants vs Zombies rises from the graves of all those piles of similar tower defense games that fell before it.

To call Plants vs Zombies a tower defense game feels a little misleading but it does have a lot in common with the genre. Throughout the game you’ll be defending your house from approaching Zombies by laying down plants but unlike tower defense games that give you an overhead view of a maze like battlefield, Plants vs Zombies fits all the action on a single screen viewed from the side with zombies shuffling across a series of straight lines. The simplistic view doesn’t mean a simple game however, as instead of having a handful of towers to lay down there’s a massive choice of plants to use on the battlefield. Before each level begins you’ll have to choose what plants you want to bring into the level with you and with each plant requiring different amounts of energy you’ll have to be prepared with a good mix of cheap and expensive plants that are both offensive and defensive. There’s no right or wrong way to go into a level but you will be finding that you’ll have to keep changing your strategies to get through, especially when night draws in. The choice of strategies to use is so vast however, that you might find that you can’t live without using a certain type of plant where another person might not care for it and it’s this choice that quickly becomes one of the most appealing aspects of Plants vs Zombies. Experimenting with the wide selection of plants, unlocking new ones and seeing how they can help you is always a lot of fun, even more so as each plant looks and behaves so differently.

There’s a great sense of humor in Plants vs Zombies, whether it’s coming from your neighbor Crazy Dave who’s always trying to sell you new seeds in exchange for money (and bacon) or the great character that comes from both the Plants and the Zombies during a level, there’s a high level of polish that’s just enjoyable to watch. The polish over the entire game is equally as well buffed, menus are quick to get through and everything’s intuitive and there’s plenty to unlock and fun mini games to try out once you’re through the rather lengthy main adventure. While it is warned in the app description, it’s worth reiterating that this isn’t designed for tablets like the iPad version and the resolution of the art is clearly designed for a smaller screen which can make the otherwise crisp and interesting visuals look – less than ideal, although everything technically still performs just fine.

PopCap does a great job of making a lot of simple pieces and putting them together into something great that’s hard to truly ‘get’ until you’ve really tried it, which you absolutely should, you won’t be disappointed.

When you’re ready, head over to the Amazon Market and download this game by clicking or scanning the QR Code below.

iDevice Users = Mobile Video Zombies

Tuesday, May 24th, 2011

According to video service provider FreeWheel, iDevice users have an insatiable hunger, and the only cure is more mobile videos.

The company’s Monetization Report keeps track of 10 billion video views, and analyzes what platform the videos were watched on (amongst other data). During the first quarter 30% of all videos analyzed were watched on iPods, another 30% were watched on iPhones, and another 30% were watched on iPads. Apples total market share of videos viewed equaled 80% of 10 billion video views. Android made up the remaining 20% of views.

Angry Birds Beach Volley Finally Makes its Way to The Android Market

Friday, May 20th, 2011

Hooray for us and especially for those poor saps on AT&T that can’t yet use the Amazon AppStore yet. The latest addition to the RIO version of Angry Birds is now available for download through the market. I may have missed the announcement of this being a normal process, but near as I can tell Amazon should be releasing all updates 2 weeks prior to the market getting their hands on it. That same process will be followed for the recently released Chuzzle game from PopCap games, including the soon to be released and much anticipated Plants vs Zombies.

The latest update, in case you have missed it, includes 30 new levels and some hidden bonuses and juicy secrets. So head on into the market and get your update going now. Also, stay tuned in the near future I will find some of those secrets and get them posted too.

Tactical Soldier – Undead Rising for iPhone. Squad Level Turn Based Zombie Action Baby! Hoo Raa!

Friday, April 15th, 2011

tactical soldier iPhone

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Tactical Soldier is a squad level turn based game where you control a group of soldiers fending off waves of zombies in an effort to uncover the dark secrets of an Army research base. You will fight your way through the levels searching for answers and meeting new squad members along the way. Your fists, pistols, shotguns, grenades and many other weapons will be your only defense against hoards of zombies.

The controls in this game are fairly simple and pretty standard for a turn based game on the iPhone. Tactical Soldier uses a tap/grid based control system where you tap a grid and you will move to that spot. The catch on this control system is that you only have a certain amount of action points that allow you to do different things each turn. Early you are by yourself and must search for signs of life and clues to uncover the mystery. When you have a zombie near you, you are able to use your action points to move and when you run out it’s the zombies turn. Once you are in range of the zombies you can shoot at them. Each gun has its own range so you must be clear on this or you will put yourself in bad situations, i.e. within striking range of a zombie but outside the range of your shotgun, this is a bad place to be. As the game progresses you will have new items you acquire as well as new weapons but the control system remains the same. You will go through a tutorial early on that teaches you how to move, shoot and complete actions so this is fairly simple to pick up.

The gameplay in Tactical Soldier for iPhone can change quickly. At times the game seems a bit slow but that is generally because you are still feeling out the controls. Once you have those down and you are moving about the base, the breaks in action will become few and far between and you will appreciate a small lull in the action to allow for looking around.

The shooting mechanism in this game took me a minute to get a feel for. That’s not to say that it is complicated because it is not but there is a method to the madness. When a zombie is in range, you can click on your weapon to ready it for firing, you then click on your target (zombie) and then click again to shoot the zombie. This all seems pretty simple and it is but don’t forget to pay attention to the percentage that appears over the zombie’s head when you click on it because this is the percentage you have of actually shooting the zombie. Trust me, bullets are precious and you do not want to run out. It is about 10 times faster killing a zombie with a gun as opposed to bare hands and you don’t want to find that out the hard way. Getting closer to the zombie increases your percentage but don’t get too close or you will have more than one zombie on you in the blink of an eye. The zombies also miss sometime so don’t think that just because you are near, you’re a goner.

tactical soldier Review

Dealing with the squad can be a bit cumbersome at times but it would be a real pain to not have that extra fire power. This game utilizes the squad immensely so don’t ignore your squad. The game makes this difficult because you must move them just as you move your character but it is easy to sometimes forget that you need to equip them with weapons as well. You can actually even pass weapons and other items back and forth throughout the game so that helps as well.

The level design is pretty simple but very nice. The game is set in a military research center so you certainly have that appearance throughout. However, the game throws a steady dosage of doors, long corridors, etc. that change up the way you approach the zombies. These zombies can prove vital to defending your position but also serve as a trap if you let the zombies too close. Write that down.

tactical soldier iPhone Game Review

The overall appearance of this game was pretty impressive. With the ability to pinch to zoom and rotate the angle of the camera with your fingers, you always have the prospective that you want. The level detail is great when you are zoomed in and easily navigated when zoomed out. You don’t gain or lose anything from either angle so you aren’t penalized for your preference and that is awesome. The visual aspects are great and flow well for a turn based game. The audio was one of my favorite parts of the game short of the mumbled commands you receive at the beginning. The music changes when zombies are in your presence and the guns sound great. I was impressed with the overall presentation of this game.

Pros

  • Love being able to move the camera
  • Great Sounds
  • Addictive gameplay

Cons

  • A bit slow at times with having only so many actions points to travel a medium distance
  • More weapons would be cool, it’s a research facility get creative
  • Would be cool if the zombies appearance changed a little more between each zombie
